New coins are made when a new block is made. The block pays out new coins. Each 210,000 blocks, that pay is cut in half. That cut is the halving.
Think of a well that gives less each few years. The flow slows by half each time. In time, it slows to near zero.
| Date | Pay per block |
|---|---|
| At the start, 2009 | 50 coins |
| Nov 28, 2012 | 25 coins |
| Jul 9, 2016 | 12.5 coins |
| May 11, 2020 | 6.25 coins |
| Apr 19, 2024 | 3.125 coins |
210,000 blocks take about four years. So cuts land about each four years.
The next cut falls at block 1,050,000. At the past pace, that lands in about 2028. The date is set by block count, not by a set day. So treat 2028 as a rough guide, not a fixed date.
With all cuts in place, only 21 million coins will ever be made.
This page says what the halving is. It does not say what the price will do. No one can know that from this fact alone.
Dates are block history, checked Oct 31, 2026. Not advice.
